Employment FAQs

Head to our Vacancies page will take you to our online recruitment system, Qjumpers, where you submit your application. It will then be reviewed by our hiring team.

  1. Cover letter. If you are currently residing outside of Dunedin, please include why you are interested in relocating.
  2. Up-to-date CV. Include details of your skills, experience and qualifications applicable to the job.
  3. Port Otago employment application questionnaire. You will be prompted to complete this as part of your online application.

The questions in our employment application questionnaire help us determine each candidate’s suitability for the job/s they’ve applied for. The questionnaire is also a disclosure form for fitness to work and criminal convictions. Port Otago is covered by the Maritime Security Act (2004), so criminal background is relevant for anyone working at port.

You will need to be eligible to work in New Zealand (i.e. citizen, resident or eligible to apply for working rights with us).

If you are applying for a position that requires you to operate heavy machinery or drive vehicles, you must hold a full and clean Class One New Zealand driver licence.

If you are not sure whether the job you are applying for requires driving, check the details of the advert or email the Port Otago People Team.

If you are having difficulty attaching a document as part of your application, check your file is not too large and/or it is in a supported format. To reduce the file size, try removing any pictures in your CV and save it as one of the following:

  • Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)
  • Microsoft Works (.wps)
  • Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)
  • Text file (.txt)

Tip: Complete your online application in one go to avoid any time-out errors.

If you have any other technical issues, phone Port Otago on 03 472 7890 and ask for the People Team or email people@portotago.co.nz. We will work with you to ensure your application gets through to us.

You will receive a confirmation email from our recruitment management system, QJumpers.

Once applications have closed, our hiring team reviews all applications as quickly as possible. If you are shortlisted, we will contact you via phone or email to discuss next steps with you.

We aim to shortlist applications as soon as possible, but it depends on the specific job and the number of applicants as to how quickly we can inform you of the outcome of your application.

If you have not been shortlisted, you will be notified by email. In many cases, due to the high volume of applications, we cannot provide individual feedback. If you would like feedback, please email our People team on people@portotago.co.nz and we will contact you.

If you are shortlisted, and then unsuccessful through the process, one of our hiring team will notify you by phone and provide you with specific feedback.

Please do apply for any future Port Otago jobs you believe match your skills and experience.

Someone from our People Team will contact you by phone or email to discuss the job requirements and to find out more about your experience and your expectations. The recruitment process for the job you have applied for will be discussed with you at shortlisting stage.

As part of our shortlisting process, we will undertake the following checks:

  • Pre-employment ACC claims history report
  • Ministry of Justice criminal conviction check

We will check that the information on these reports aligns to the information provided on your employment application questionnaire.

If you are applying for a job that involves operating machinery, you will undertake a Dover assessment. (This computer-based assessment looks at eye-hand coordination, reactions to stimuli in various environmental conditions, time and motion, reaction times, etc.)

Yes. All Port Otago jobs involve a formal interview and, depending on the job, we may undertake specific assessments to check your suitability.

Please contact the People Team as soon as possible. If you are unable to attend your interview due to unforeseen circumstances, we will try to reschedule a new time.

If you progress to the next stage of the recruitment process, we will need to undertake pre-employment checks. These are to ensure your suitability and fitness for the job you have applied for. All jobs at Port Otago require the following pre-employment checks:

  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening (with TDDA)
  • Pre-employment medical declaration
  • Reference checks.

Depending on the specific position you are applying for, you may be required to undergo the following pre-employment checks:

  • Pre-employment medicals (functional assessment, general practitioner review, nurse assessment)
  • Driver licence and relevant qualifications check (i.e. OSH certificate).

Please ensure you’re upfront and provide accurate information during the recruitment process. If you provide misleading or false information, your application will not progress any further.

If you reach this stage, it is likely you are a preferred candidate and we will need to confirm your employment history, performance and work style.

As part of our pre-employment screening, we undertake a minimum of two reference checks.

One of these references needs to be from your current manager or someone who regularly supervises your work. The second reference should be from a recent manager, normally your most recent employer prior to your current job.
You will need to let your referees know that we will be in contact and check they are happy to be contacted. We will not contact your referees until you have confirmed we are able to do so.

Once you have completed your pre-employment checks, someone from our hiring team will give you a call to confirm you have met our pre-employment requirements and that we would like to progress to the final stage in our recruitment process, which is a meet and greet. During this, you will meet the relevant Leadership Team member from the team you have applied to join, and the Chief Executive.

This ensures we are bringing the right people into Port Otago – people who will be a great team fit, share our values and have a genuine commitment to health and safety.

If you are successful, someone from our hiring team will call and let you know that we would like to progress to making an offer. You will then be emailed a contract pack including your letter of offer and all other relevant offer documents for you to review, sign and return to the People Team.
