Cargo Handler roles

As a Port Otago Cargo Handler, you are employed directly by the company, which means you have access to the full range of employee benefits (see below). This is an important distinction, as not all New Zealand ports offer direct employment for cargo handler roles.

Our Cargo Handlers’ total remuneration package is worth $99,000 per annum, and we provide one  guaranteed day off each week.

About the Cargo Handler role

As a Cargo Handler you will:

  • Operate heavy machinery (including our straddle carriers and side loaders) to transport containers around our terminal to connect with container vessels.
  • Undertake lashing duties to secure containers on vessels. (Note that this is physical work that involves heavy lifting).
  • Work outside in all weather conditions and at heights.
  • Need the ability to balance shift work with your lifestyle.

How the roster works

You’ll receive a guaranteed minimum of 40 hours per week. Our shipping service networks generally call at Port Otago across the weekend, which means Saturday, Sunday and Monday are almost always work days during peak season.

Each Friday, you receive an indicative weekly roster that includes:

  • Confirmed shifts for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
  • Indicative shifts for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. These weekday shifts are confirmed the day prior.
  • One guaranteed day off that cannot be changed.
  • Indicative rostered days off. These may change and can be staggered, due to the nature of shipping.
  • Guaranteed 40 hours. For Vessel rotation, this means 4 x 10-hour shifts (either 0600-1600 or 1600-0200); for the Yard rotation, this means 5 x 8-hour shifts (either 0700-1500 or 1500-2300).
  • Indicative notice if overtime shifts may be required (up to 50 hours). These shifts are typically needed during our peak season.
